Chapter 7
Mapping the Dark Below
Year 1 of the Gloom, Night of the First Day
As the stone pulsed with faint, earthen light, Kaelen and the party stood at the precipice of an older, deeper conflict, realizing the land itself held a hidden counterweight to the tyrannical sky-grid above.
The lingering resonance of the sky-grid's retaliation had barely faded into the damp evening air when Thalia made her decisive move. Kneeling before the deeply embedded stone runic marker that Kaelen had uncovered beneath the twisted willow tree, she placed both palms flat against the ancient, moss-cleared surface. Her fingers traced the deep, angular grooves carved into the rock, seeking the secret cadence of the earth.
Beside her, Kaelen watched with bated breath, feeling the air grow suddenly still as Thalia closed her eyes and began to channel her energy directly into the marker. For a tense moment, nothing happened save for the faint, rhythmic thrumming vibrating through the soles of their boots. Then, with a sudden, sharp intake of breath from Thalia, the stone awakened. A soft, luminescent blue glow surged through the carved channels, spider-webbing across the weathered face of the boulder as it drank in her magic.
Across the campsite, Garrett and Vane paused in their watchful pacing, their heads snapping toward the sudden illumination. Lyra took a sharp step forward, her tired eyes wide with sudden wonder as the glowing lines detached themselves from the stone, rising upward into the chilly night air. They twisted and wove together, casting a cool, ethereal light over the companions' faces and projecting an intricate, glowing three-dimensional map of subterranean pathways that wound deep beneath Whispering Hollow.
It was a detailed, architectural blueprint of ancient tunnels and vaulted chambers forgotten by time, glowing steadily in defiance of the oppressive gloom overhead. As the map spun slowly in the air, charting a safe and hidden route through the dark bowels of the earth, the party realized they had found more than just a momentary reprieve—they had found a way forward. But as the subterranean cartography settled into a stable projection, the deepest corridors on the map began to flicker with a faint, warning pulse, hinting that whatever secrets lay buried down there were not entirely empty.
