Chapter 47
Thermal Tides and Basalt Echoes
Year 1 of the Gloom, Morning of the Fourth Day
As oily vapor and heated air began venting directly beneath Lyra's boots in the storage alcove, the subterranean complex groaned under intensifying thermal strain.
Deep within the freezing shadows of the Bedrock Void, Oren braced himself against the slick stone wall as a fresh shudder wracked the subterranean complex. Without warning, a deafening crack echoed from an unseen vertical flue nearby, followed by a ferocious blast of superheated air and pressurized steam that melted the surrounding rime into a cascading sheet of boiling water. The violent seismic ripple tore through the lower chambers, shaking loose tiny fragments of dark basalt that pattered down into the absolute gloom below like heavy raindrops.
At the same moment, tucked away in her abandoned storage alcove, Lyra faced her own escalating struggle against the subterranean heat. With superheated air billowing from the floor vents and coating her boots in oily silt, she braced her shoulder against the damp stone alcove wall. She seized the heavy, heat-warped iron release lever with both hands, ignoring the blistering temperature of the metal as she threw her weight into forcing the rusted teeth of the gear mechanism past its jammed threshold, fighting desperately to stave off a complete structural backdraft.
Cupping his hands around his mouth against the damp, echoing acoustics of the cavern, Oren projected his voice across the black chasm to gauge if Bram was still within earshot beyond the newly formed gap. The sound bounced harshly off the slick basalt columns, returning only a faint, muffled distortion that told him just how completely the seismic shift had isolated him from the upper maintenance shaft. Staring across the empty dark into the rising vapor, Oren tightened his grip on his whetstone, left to wonder how much longer the fractured bedrock could hold before everything finally gave way.
