Chapter 44
The Singing Metal and the Shifting Chasm
Year 1 of the Gloom, Morning of the Fourth Day
While the heavy iron hatch held fast against swarming tunnel predators, subterranean heat began to pulse upward through an exposed fissure, causing a discarded geophone to vibrate violently.
With the iron-reinforced access hatch firmly wedged and secured against the stunned predators massing in the corridor outside, Bram turned his focus back to the interior clearing work. Beside the newly exposed stone-paved tunnel, the heavy cast-iron geophone left behind by earlier surveyors suddenly came to life. The metal casing rang with an intense, high-pitched metallic whine as superheated air from the depths surged upward through the newly formed fissure, quickly growing far too hot for bare skin to touch.
That shrill ringing proved to be a catastrophic catalyst. As the geophone rattled furiously against the floor, the violent resonance triggered a sudden, localized collapse in the newly revealed tunnel. Bram barely managed to roll backward onto his stomach into the safety of the secondary maintenance shaft as several heavy stone pavers dislodged entirely, sliding down the dark chute and leaving behind a wider, smoking chasm that cut him off completely from the path ahead.
Far below in the freezing, absolute gloom of the Bedrock Void, Oren pressed a gloved hand against the slick basalt wall. A heavy, rhythmic acoustic shockwave traveled straight through the stone, vibrating in his teeth and perfectly matching the metallic whine of the geophone echoing from above. As the shockwave passed, the unseasonably warm, oily condensation coating the cavern walls began to bubble and steam slightly, confirming that the upper pressure backdraft was intensifying toward a breaking point.
