Chapter 30
Gales of the Lower Vaults
Year 1 of the Gloom, Morning of the Fourth Day
While Lyra and Bram fortified a secure bulkhead in the maintenance shaft to protect the recovering Thalia, a tense confrontation unfolded between Kaelen and Vane at the master control valve.
The Pressure Drop and the Scavenger's Warning
Without warning, the air pressure in the subterranean complex plunged with sickening suddenness. A whistling gale rushed through the hairline cracks of the secondary maintenance shaft, carrying the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and sulfur straight up from the deep vaults. Lyra, Bram, and the recovering Thalia had to brace hard against the violent atmospheric draft as loose dust and tiny pebbles were swept wildly down the corridor, serving as an ominous physical reminder of the volatile forces colliding above and below them.
Even as they fought to keep their footing against the howling wind, Bram stiffened, his weathered nose twitching as he caught a greasy, unfamiliar musk riding the sulfurous currents. The underground scavenger lowered his stance instantly, drawing a notched blade from his belt with practiced silence. He exchanged a grim, knowing look with Lyra, muttering that the draft had brought more than just stale air up from the roots—blind tunnel predators had caught the scent, and they were riding the same atmospheric current straight toward the maintenance shaft.
The Arrival of Oren
Before Bram or Lyra could double-check the reinforcement struts on their temporary barrier, the harsh screech of scraping iron echoed from an unmapped vertical vent overhead. A disoriented figure came tumbling out of the narrow shaft, sprawling hard onto the cold stone floor of the secondary maintenance shaft. Coughing violently against the thick dust and gasping for breath, the newcomer scrambled back against the wall with wide, panic-stricken eyes.
It was Oren, a local subterranean scout whose clothes were torn and caked with dried mud from hours of crawling through forgotten service chutes. He raised a trembling hand, shouting over the continuous roar of the pressure draft to warn them that the upper tunnel blocks had completely collapsed upstream, cutting off his usual retreat. As Thalia pushed herself upright with Lyra's steadying arm, she looked from the frantic scout to the howling black corridor beyond, knowing full well that whatever Kaelen and Vane had unleashed at the core valve had only just begun to unravel the world around them.
