Chapter 11
The Echoes Below
Year 1 of the Gloom, Morning of the Second Day
After mapping a hidden subterranean junction beneath Whispering Hollow and stoking their hearth for the journey ahead, the party began their perilous descent into the dark beneath a sky locked in artificial gloom.
The spiral staircase beneath Whispering Hollow seemed to have no end, boring down into the bedrock like a rusted corkscrew into dark earth. Kaelen led the pace, his boots clicking with measured caution against the damp, lichen-slicked stone, while a flickering sphere of conjured light bobbed in the center of their tight formation, casting long, writhing shadows against the curved walls. Every breath carried the cold, mineral scent of subterranean depths, thick with the weight of ages and the faint, unmistakable tang of ozone.
Hours had bled away since they left the surface camp behind, trading the heavy, cloud-choked air of the upper world for the absolute silence of the deep. But the silence did not last. As they rounded a particularly sharp corner where the stairwell gave way to a wider, hand-carved hall, a sharp crystalline echo reverberated through the dark. It was a clear, piercing tone like a struck glass bell, rolling off the rough-hewn walls and washing over the party.
Instantly, the magical wards flickering around Kaelen and the others flared in protest, their protective light rippling and straining against an invisible pressure. Vane reached out, pressing a gauntleted hand against the damp stonework, his eyes narrowing as he felt the physical fabric of the corridor shift subtly in resonance beneath his fingertips. Beside him, Thalia caught her breath, closing her eyes to attune herself to the floorboards of the world. A distinct, harmonic vibration was humming directly through the soles of her boots, steady and rhythmic like the pulse of some gargantuan iron heart.
It was no natural draft or settling earth. The vibration matched the artificial arcane grid humming high above them in the perpetual clouds, proving that the roots of the dark shroud extended deep into the world's guts. They were drawing closer to the source, and as the crystalline echo faded back into the damp stone, leaving only the hum of subterranean resonance in its wake, the party gripped their weapons tighter and stepped further into the dark.
