Chapter 17
The Escalating Tides of War and Ruin
Early Winter of the 15th Year of the Obsidian Tide
As marine priests instituted strict containment protocols high above bioluminescent, awakening trenches, the fractured western councils and eastern valley insurgents braced for the horrors closing in around them.
Sulfur and Steel in the Eastern Valleys
Across the volatile valleys of the Border of Whispers, the relentless demand for frontline weapons forced Obsidian Pact artificers to push their experimental mobile smelting furnaces far beyond safe thermal thresholds. Bypassing safety governors to squeeze every ounce of productivity from the machines, the artificers triggered catastrophic over-pressurization. The resulting industrial failure caused massive, choking releases of sulfurous gas and minor tectonic collapses that threatened to swallow the logistical wagon trains attempting desperately to transport raw ore forward to the vanguard forces.
That same relentless military pressure translated into unremitting bloodshed inside the rebellious town of Ironhollow, where the brutal block-by-block struggle reached a grim milestone. Clan Vane vanguard units launched coordinated night assaults against the fortified interior barricades, employing heavy breaching charges against the reinforced municipal storehouses. Insurgent defenders, refusing to yield despite severe shortages of clean water and medical supplies, fought back with desperate fury, utilizing improvised pneumatic traps and close-quarters ambushes to stall the Pact's relentless advance through the smoking ruins.
Patrols of the Western Archipelago
Far across the water in the relative calm of the western island chain, the administrative paralysis finally gave way to decisive military action as winter took hold. Bolstered by the successful installation of Master Artificer Vaelen's sonic-repulsion engines onto local hulls, Captain Kaelen formally mobilized the western harbor defense coalition.
Breaking past the idle, ghost-town anchorways and long-frozen trade fleets, newly retrofitted patrol skiffs crewed by garrison veterans and independent sea captains cut through the chill swells. Their mission was clear: to patrol the shallow coastal fishing channels and aggressively deter the blind predatory leviathans from pressing any closer to the vulnerable shore settlements, drawing a fragile line in the water against the encroaching dark.
