Chapter 38
Fevered Threshold
Twenty-Sixth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

As Commander Varis and his enforcers swept the outer corridors, Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane remained concealed in the shadowed kitchen alcove, their presence shielded when a clatter in the scullery drew the hunting party away.
The heavy, rhythmic cadence of Varis's armored boots faded down the outer corridor, leaving behind a silence so sudden it felt like a blow. In the suffocating confinement of the storage alcove, the air hung thick with the dry dust of milled grain and the sharp, coppery tang of heightened magic. Lord Kaelen did not step back. Instead, the stillness cracked open whatever fragile discipline had kept him tethered to caution. His gaze locked onto Lyra Vane, his eyes glittering in the gloom, before his calloused hands found the soft curve of her waist, fingers digging through linen and wool to drag her violently flush against the heavy dark velvet of his doublet.
A sharp gasp broke from Lyra’s lips as her body met his, all lingering space erased in an instant. Before the sound could dissipate into the rafters, Kaelen caught her chin, tilting her head back, and took her mouth with a bruising, hungry kiss that obliterated the last remnants of vigilance. His mouth parted hers with relentless urgency, tasting of salt, adrenaline, and raw defiance. Lyra shuddered against him, her fingers tangling desperately into the thick velvet at his shoulders, pulling him nearer until there was nowhere left to retreat. Beneath her bodice, the hidden hearth-anchor surged violently to life, reacting to the sudden tempest in her blood. A blinding crimson luminescence flared from her chest, bleeding through the fabric of her chemise and casting their joined silhouettes in stark, fevered shades of scarlet against the rough stone walls.
The anchor radiated a searing, rhythmic heat that burned between them, melting away the chilling fear of the purge. Kaelen groaned into her mouth, his lips sliding down the arch of her throat, trailing fire across the fevered skin where her pulse hammered wildly. His hands moved with possessive deliberate weight, sliding up from the curve of her hips to cup the small of her back, pressing her hips firmly into his own as he backed her against the towering, coarse burlap sacks of grain. Lyra arched into the contact, her hands shifting to slide into the dark curls at the nape of his neck, her nails scraping over his warm skin. Every heavy breath they shared felt like an open conspiracy, a confession that their ancient bond was no longer an unwanted shackle, but a consuming fire.
His palms traced upward along her ribs, his thumbs brushing the underside of her breasts where the artifact pulsed its fierce, crimson heartbeat. For several long, suspended moments, the perilous reality of the citadel dissolved entirely. There were no enforcers in the halls, no court decrees hanging over their heads, only the desperate friction of their bodies, the intoxicating slide of fevered flesh, and the reckless cadence of two people who had looked into an abyss and chosen each other instead.
Gradually, the blinding crimson blaze beneath Lyra’s bodice softened into a deep, heavy thrum, though the heat lingering on her skin remained fever-bright. She rested her forehead against Kaelen’s collarbone, listening to the wild, uncalibrated beat of his chest until her own breathing began to steady. The grand silence of the kitchens returned, cold and hollow, reminding them of the stone that enclosed them.
