Chapter 1
Frost and Obsidian
Midnight of the Sixteenth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

The Threshold
On a bitter night in the third month of the Iron Frost, heavy carriage wheels crunched against the obsidian gravel before the grand gates of the Ember Court. Lyra Vane, holding the cold parchment of the ancient pact that sealed her fate, stepped down into the pale moonlight. The wind howling off the northern peaks bit sharply at her cheeks, but her posture remained rigid, refusing to let the chill betray the terror coiling tightly in her stomach. Waiting in the shadows of the arched doorway stood Lord Kaelen, his silver hair catching the flickering torchlight and his amber eyes fixed on her with a mixture of predatory curiosity and chilling disdain. Neither spoke as she crossed the threshold, the heavy oak doors slamming shut behind her with a final, echoing report that seemed to lock their destinies together in the dark stone halls.
Hours bled into the deep watches of the night as the court settled into an uneasy silence, though for Lyra, sleep was entirely out of reach. When the clock struck midnight, the transition into the new day brought her out toward the heart of the fortress, driven by an urgent need to challenge the invisible chains wrapped around her throat.
The Hearth Hall Clash
Standing before the towering basalt hearth of the Ember Court, where orange flames danced across jagged stone, Lyra Vane demanded clarity from Lord Kaelen on her binding. The heat of the fire roared at her back, but it was nothing compared to the electric static charging the space between them. Kaelen lounged near the mantel, unfazed by her defiance and visibly amused by her fiery spirit; his lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile as she listed her grievances regarding the blood-pact.
Without warning, Kaelen pushed away from the stone and closed the distance between them, stepping close enough that the heat of his immortal blood radiated against her skin. Lyra instinctively drew in a sharp breath, her gaze locked onto his iridescent eyes as he towered over her. He reached out, his long fingers trailing a fraction of an inch from her jawline, radiating a low-humming power that made her pulse race. Their verbal sparring turned sharp and low, every word loaded with hidden threats and an undeniable, combustible tension. Standing there in the flickering amber light, acutely aware of the dangerous proximity between their bodies, neither of them made a move to step back.
