Chapter 7
Codex of Steam and Stone
Twenty-Third of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

Down in the steaming underbelly of the citadel, scullery worker Bronwen kept watch as Lady Vespera's net tightened inexorably around the lower levels, risking her position to send a hurried warning toward the archive stairwell.
Clatter in the Undercroft
Down in the draughty undercroft far beneath the Ember Court Archives, Bronwen hurried along the flagstones balancing a heavy copper kettle meant for the scullery hearth. Startled by the sudden sharp clang of an upper gate, she stumbled against a stack of firewood, sending the scalding water hissing across the floor and the metal vessel clattering noisily into the drain. The loud clatter echoed up the spiral stone service shaft, momentarily drawing two of Lady Vevan's patrolling guards away from the archive threshold to investigate the commotion in the lower quarters.
The heavy brass kettle rolled across flagstones slick with soapy water, steam hissing into the drafty air of the servants' hall. Bronwen dropped to her knees, her hands scrambling against the chill floor while the guard towering above her tapped the pommel of his shortsword. The distraction had done its job in the upper galleries, but down here in the limestone underbelly, the scrutiny was personal and sharp. Forced to invent a desperate alibi on the spot, she muttered about a rusted latch and a clumsy slip, her heart hammering against her ribs until the guard finally grunted, turned on his heel, and stalked away into the shadows.
Time slipped past through the cold hours of the night, the court above settling into an uneasy, frost-bitten slumber while the threat of Lady Vespera's purge hung heavy in the air.
The Vault Sweep and the Kitchen Exit
By the chill dawn of the following day, Bronwen reached the heavy outer doors of the archive vaults in the nick of time, rapping sharply with a heavy iron poker to bypass the locked seal and urgently warning Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane that Lady Vespera's dawn sweep was imminent. Roused from their tense confinement by the sudden external interruption, Kaelen immediately stepped back from the alcove, refocusing his protective instincts on a tactical escape plan rather than private conflict. Together, the three of them slipped through a hidden maintenance tunnel leading out toward the lower courtyards just moments before Vespera's guards breached the inner sanctuary, safely relocating their sanctuary to the bustling, anonymous noise of the grand kitchens.
Deep within the narrow masonry of the maintenance tunnel, Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane navigated the cramped darkness together, their forced physical proximity reigniting the unresolved tension from their previous encounter. Pressed against the damp stone wall of the tunnel to let Bronwen pass ahead, Lord Kaelen slid his hand against Lyra's waist to steady her in the pitch black. The heat of his body radiated through her tunic as his breath caught against her ear, sharp and urgent, turning their hurried flight into a breathless, charged moment of intimacy away from Vespera's reach. His fingers curved over the dip of her hip, pulling her hard against his chest until she could feel the erratic beat of his heart matching her own, a dangerous reminder of the fierce desire that constantly threatened to undo them both.
Meanwhile, having guided Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane to safety through the maintenance tunnel, Bronwen attempted to slip back to her normal duties in the grand kitchens, only to find herself interrogated by Lady Vespera's sharp-eyed master cook, Master Pendaran. Pendaran cornered Bronwen near the roasting spits, demanding to know why she was missing from her post during the dawn hour and smelling of archive dust. As the heat of the hearths beat down on them, Pendaran threatened to report her suspected insubordination directly to Lady Vespera's staff, leaving the brave scullery maid caught in a perilous web of suspicion as the court's wider net continued to close.
