Chapter 26
Flickering Embers Upon the Threshold
Twenty-Sixth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

While Bronwen slipped away into the mist-choked waterways with the canal key, Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane remained hidden in the deep embrace of the Grand Kitchens' pantry as the citadel's purge raged outside.
A Breath Held in the Shadows
In the confined dark of the Grand Kitchens pantry, the frantic rush of heavy boots finally fades away down the stone corridor as Commander Varis's patrol commits fully to the scullery diversion. Lord Kaelen's arm tightens securely around Lyra's waist, pulling her flush against his chest where the steady, heavy beat of his heart echoes her own. The crimson and gold luminescence radiating from the ancient hearth-anchor beneath her bodice casts long, flickering shadows across their faces, illuminating the sharp angles of Kaelen's jaw and the dark, focused intensity in Lyra's eyes. Neither speaks; every lingering defense and courtly guard crumbles away in the close heat.
Kaelen's hand moves upward, his fingers tangling softly in her hair as his lips brush the sensitive curve of her throat, eliciting a sharp, trembling intake of breath from Lyra. Her hands slide up to grip the heavy velvet of his doublet, drawing him down into a fierce, consuming kiss that banishes the danger just beyond the wooden door. The scent of woodsmoke and old stone mingles with the rising heat of their skin, every movement charged with the desperate knowledge of what they are risking. For a few stolen moments, amid the simmering enmity of the Ember Court, the ancient blood-pact and the looming purge vanish, leaving only the heat of skin against skin and the heavy, rhythmic thrum of magic binding them closer than any decree could forbid.
Footsteps on the Flagstones
The fragile quiet shatters all too soon. Having found only scattered copper cookware and a broken cable in the scullery, Commander Varis abandons the search there and orders his enforcers back toward the main corridor.
His heavy tread strikes the flagstones with measured, menacing deliberation as he sweeps his hand across the oak paneling of the pantry door. A distinct, unnatural heat hums through the iron latch, radiating outward into the corridor air. Varis pauses, his fingers hovering over the wood as suspicion sharpens his gaze, setting the stage for an inevitable reckoning just beyond the timber barrier.
