Chapter 39
Embers and Cold Stones Along the Tiber
November 27, 45 BC
Titus braved the driving river wind to hammer on the heavy oak door of Caelus's tar-stained workshop, seeking emergency shelter and warmth as winter closed in around them.
Frost on the Riverbank
The icy dampness of the riverbank pierced straight through the thin wool of Marcus's old tenth legion cloak. Shivering uncontrollably on the damp earth inside their drafty riverside shelter, his breathing turned shallow and erratic as the biting winter air sapped what little warmth remained in his exhausted frame. Titus worked frantically to feed the last dry twigs into the dying embers, his fingers numb and clumsy against the frost. The reality of their unsustainable survival crisis pressed in hard against the flimsy walls of the shelter, leaving them entirely at the mercy of the freezing night.
Realizing Marcus was slipping into unconsciousness and the shelter was losing its last vestiges of warmth, Titus made a split-second decision. Leaving the freezing hearth behind, he sprinted upstream through the biting gale to hammer frantically on the door of the grizzled boatwright Caelus, desperate to rouse him before it was too late. Braving the bitter gales sweeping off the Tiber once more on the return trip, Titus managed to secure a bundle of dry pine kindling and a small wool blanket. Returning to the damp shelter, he carefully tended the failing hearth, coaxing a steady flame that beat back the acute hypothermia threatening Marcus's life.
Shadows Within the Subura
Sheltered from the bitter wind within the stone walls of her estate, Livia rested by a crackling brazier alongside Valeria. The Subura estate remained a secure sanctuary surrounded by high stone walls and heavy oak doors, featuring a sunlit atrium with a courtyard fountain, blossoming herbs, and marble tiles now touched by the late November frost. Despite her earlier resolve to shut out the past, the unnatural stillness of the courtyard tonight stirred a quiet, nagging unease in her mind.
Looking out toward the frost-covered stones, Livia found herself unexpectedly restless, wondering if Marcus's silence tonight meant he had finally given up or if something was amiss out in the freezing dark. Valeria watched her closely from across the warmth of the brazier, the unspoken tension hanging between them as the winter gale whistled against the heavy oak doors.
