Chapter 23
Sanctuary Behind the Stone Wall
November 8, 45 BC
Out in the dusty lanes beyond the wall, Gaius remained entirely oblivious to the misdelivered note while Marcus waged an aggressive war of words at the threshold. Inside, Livia stood tall between her courtyard greens and the demanding world, her spirit unbroken while past and present warred for her future.
With Marcus's voice echoing harshly through the heavy timber door of the Subura estate, Livia firmly drew the latch tighter and turned her back on the entrance. Inside the sunlit garden, Valeria offered her a reassuring smile and handed her a clay jug of watered wine, stepping lightly from the garden beds to touch Livia's arm with a dry, witty remark about the veteran's overblown sense of theater. The unexpected humor broke the heavy tension, drawing a genuine smile from Livia and anchoring them both in their shared sanctuary.
Sheltered by the high plaster walls, the two women chose to block out the harsh verbal sparring at the threshold, turning their focus entirely to one another and finding quiet strength in shared companionship. They leaned into the rhythm of pruning and watering the basil and blooming herbs, using the shared task to quietly reaffirm their mutual commitment away from the chaotic suitors. The raised voices outside formed a discordant backdrop, but rather than yielding to the pressure, they shared an unspoken pact to protect their hard-won peace.
Just beyond that timber gate, however, the street air was sharp with conflict. Marcus stood tall on the cobblestones, confronting a bewildered and desperate Gaius with ruthless precision. Brandishing the details of the ruined grain contracts he had learned from the intercepted scroll, Marcus pressed his tactical advantage to the fullest. He openly mocked Gaius's sudden financial collapse, weaponizing the merchant's absolute ruin right outside Livia's closed door while demanding in a harsh, unforgiving tone that his rival pack up his remaining dignity and leave the Subura forever, leaving Gaius cornered and panicked as the bitter reality of his losses closed in around him.
