Chapter 38
Sweet Berries by Lamplight
Friday, September 27th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

Previously, Barnaby and Saffron watched a rolling acorn slip into the floorboards, catching the damp scent of the root tunnels far below.
Rain tapped a steady song against the thick bark of the ancient oak tree. Inside the secret room behind the library scrolls, the little lamps made of hollow acorn caps glowed with soft yellow light. Cold gusts rattled outside, but the round room was dry and quiet.
At one side of the smooth stone table, Bramble the hedgehog sat on a sturdy wooden stool. Pip sat right next to him. Between their paws rested a long band of pale yellow wool. Bramble worked with steady care, using his wooden knitting pins to shape the braided edge. His dark snout twitched in focus with every loop. Pip held a small spool carved from birch wood. Each time Bramble needed more thread, Pip turned the spool with gentle paws, making sure the fluffy fibers never knotted.
"Just two more stitches," Bramble said in his low, gravelly voice. "Hold that end firm, Pip."
Pip held the thread steady against the stone. "It is so soft," Pip said. "Like a warm cloud."
Bramble pulled the last loop through the braid and tucked the loose tail into the back. The work was done. He picked up the yellow neck-wrap and held it up beneath the glowing acorn-cap lamps. The stitches were neat and snug, thick enough to keep out any draft.
"Try it on," Bramble said with a wide smile.
Pip stood up on his toes and lifted his chin. Bramble leaned forward and carefully draped the soft wrap around Pip's shoulders. The hedgehog smoothed the edges flat so they settled neatly around the mouse's neck. A cozy warmth spread through Pip at once, driving away the chill that drifted up from the floorboards. Pip touched the fluffy braided hem with both paws, beaming with delight.
"It fits just right," Pip said happily. "I do not feel the cold at all now."
Fennel stepped out from the shadows near the old library trunk. The young field mouse adjusted her own patched wool scarf, her bright eyes shining in the lamplight. In her paws, she carried a tiny wicker basket piled high with fresh wild blackberries. The fruit glistened with clean water droplets she had shaken off before coming inside.
With a polite little hop, Fennel reached across the polished grey stone. She slid the basket right into the middle of the table between Pip and Bramble.
"Knitting is hungry work," Fennel said, nudging the basket forward. "These came from the bramble bushes near the south branch. They are ripe and sweet. Please have some."
"Thank you, Fennel!" Pip said. He picked up a plump, dark berry and took a bite. Sweet juice burst across his tongue. Bramble took one too, popping the whole berry into his mouth and nodding in approval.
Across the table, Barnaby looked up from his work. The small mouse had golden dust clinging to his soft grey coat and long whiskers, and his woven pouch rested near his elbow. He had been cutting shapes out of old scrap paper, but now he set his little shears aside. He looked over at Saffron. The little brown field mouse was sitting very quietly nearby. Her fur was still damp from the heavy afternoon rain, and her whiskers gave a small shiver every time the wind blew against the seam in the outer bark.
