Chapter 1
The Shiny Key in the Moss
Tuesday, September 24th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

On a breezy Tuesday morning in late September, Pip the little brown mouse scurries out onto the balcony of his cozy treehouse. He is hoping to find some sweet berries for breakfast, but today he finds something much more surprising instead.
While looking near the thick green moss by the root of the ancient oak, Pip peers under a soft green clump. There, he uncovers a tiny, shiny brass key with a clover-shaped handle. Pip lifts it up into the warm sunlight, turning it around in his paws. It sparkles so brightly that it makes his eyes wide. Pip wonders what locked door in their village this special key might open.
Just as Pip is admiring the little treasure, Bramble wanders out from the fern patch and stops in surprise. The friendly hedgehog sees the gleam of metal flashing in the light and trots over to get a better look.
Bramble leans in close, his prickly quills rustling softly. He looks from the shiny key to Pip with wonder in his round black eyes, wondering what such a strange, heavy thing could possibly unlock in their quiet village. Together, the two friends stand side by side, ready to find out whose door the key belongs to.
