Chapter 47
A Bright Blue Thread
Friday, September 27th, 42nd Year of the Canopy
Pip and his friends listened as the amber threshold began to glow, answering Pip's gentle footsteps with a warm root melody that waited quietly for the morning storm to pass.
Rain tapped a steady beat against the thick bark of the great oak tree. Inside the secret room behind the brass archway, the air was warm and smelled of sweet blackberries and dried lavender blossoms. Pip stood near the glowing amber circle, his yellow neck-wrap tucked tidy and snug. His first step of the family walking chant had left a gentle hum lingering in the wood, like the quiet ring of a bell after it is struck.
Clover stepped forward to take the second turn. Clover took a slow, steady breath and watched the faint circles carved into the wood. Pip nodded with an encouraging smile. Then, with careful precision, Clover tapped out the second rhythm of the ancient song. Tap, tap, tap. The amber boards answered at once. A sweet, clear chime rose from the roots below, ringing in perfect harmony with Pip's earlier note. It was not a loud noise, but it was bright enough to match the steady patter of the freezing rain outside.
"That sounded just like the river song my grandmother used to hum," Barnaby whispered. The little mouse stood tall, golden dust dusting his coat and his woven dandelion pouch resting against his side.
"Now comes the bottom note," Pip said quietly. "The heavy step that ties the walking chant together."
Barnaby stepped forward onto the third ring. He placed his paw down with a firm and steady thump, just as the family song instructed. The reaction came instantly. A deep, rich thrum shuddered through the heartwood under their feet. It was a round, comforting rumble that traveled straight up their legs and into their chests. The chilly drafts from the storm seemed to melt away as the deep chamber underneath shared its stored summer warmth.
Across the cozy chamber, the vibration rattled the legs of the heavy corner bookshelf. A quiet plop sounded from beneath the bottom plank. Out rolled a round ball of sky-blue knitting wool, spinning across the reed mat. It tumbled past the empty cups and the berry basket, unrolling a neat line of bright blue yarn across the room until it bumped right against Saffron's foot.
Saffron looked down in surprise. The small brown field mouse had her cloak pulled close as she rested on her soft moss cushion. She set down her warm mug of tea and scooped up the wool in her paws. "Where did you come from, little blue ball?" she asked with a soft chuckle. It was clean and dry, tucked away and forgotten long before the friends had ever found the hidden room.
Near the center of the chamber, Clover wanted to be certain they had the melody right for the morning journey. Clover placed one boot carefully beside Pip's foot and tapped the second measured note once more. Again, the amber wood answered with that friendly, resonant chime. Pip hummed the top note, and Barnaby tapped his heel for the low hum. Together, the three notes blended into a peaceful chord that filled every dark corner of the study.
Saffron began to wind the long blue yarn back into a tidy sphere, following the trail across the reed mat toward the bookshelf. As she pulled the thread taut, she noticed that the very end of the string was still caught on something wedged far back in the dark wood.
