Chapter 55
A Whispered Meadow Hello
Year 1 of the Rainbow Era, Spring Late Afternoon
Previously in Fairy Fantastic, Chloe and her fairy friends shared happy giggles and polite little bows with a dancing golden beetle in the meadow sunshine.
Whoosh went the cool afternoon wind across the tall grass of Chime Cove Canopy. It made the flower stalks nod their heads, and it made the blades of grass dance side to side. Pip stopped right in the middle of a step. His little fairy shoes tapped the soft earth, and his eyes went round and wide. His tiny brown stick wobbled in his fingers as he froze, listening to the chilly breeze rustle around them.
Quick as a bunny, Pip brought his hand up to his green shirt. Pat, pat, pat went his fingers against his front pocket. He held his breath for just one teeny second, pressing gently against the cloth. Beneath his fingers sat something hard, round, and wonderfully smooth. It was his shiny blue pebble, tucked right where it belonged. It hadn't slipped away. It hadn't bounced into the moss. It was safe.
Pip let out a big puff of air, his shoulders relaxing with a happy wiggle. He looked up and beamed the widest, brightest grin he had ever smiled.
"Still there, Pip?" asked Chloe with a cheerful chuckle. She crouched low so she could be right on his level. Her long pink hair tumbled over her shoulders, and her bright freckles crinkled in amusement. Up above her forehead, the magical star daisy crown began to shine. It poured out a cozy, dancing rainbow light—warm pinks, sky blues, and sunny yellows—that pushed away the chilly nip of the breeze and wrapped all three friends in a toasty glow.
Blossom fluttered down through the rainbow light, her tiny wings humming like a gentle song. She reached up with both hands to straighten her wide clover leaf hat, giving it a playful tug so it didn't blow away in the wind. She hovered right by Pip's ear, wiggling her nose. "Pip's pebble is the safest pebble in the whole wide meadow!" she chimed, holding her thin green wand ready for whatever fun might happen next.
"It is," Pip giggled, giving the pocket one more proud little tap. "It's sleeping in its own cozy bed."
Just as Pip gave that final pat, something tickled the toe of his little shoe. A tiny rustle came from the moss below, followed by the softest sound in the world. Bzzzz. It was not an angry buzz, and it was not a loud buzz. It was a drowsy, cuddly little hum, like a tiny engine singing itself to sleep.
Pip looked down, and his mouth made a soft little 'o'.
Nudged right against the edge of his shoe was a tiny bumblebee. The little bee wore a fuzzy yellow coat that looked as soft as velvet, banded with stripes of warm chocolate brown. Its wings were tucked neatly against its round sides, and its tiny antennae twitched once, twice, before settling into the green moss. The little bee let out another sleepy hum and snuggled an inch closer to Pip's shoe, thinking it was the finest, safest wall in the whole meadow to take an afternoon nap against.
Pip bent his knees very slowly, moving like a quiet shadow so he wouldn't startle the tiny guest. Chloe leaned in too, her sparkly pink shoes quiet upon the grass, while Blossom drifted down until she was sitting right on a low stem, peering over the edge with shining eyes.
