Chapter 52
Pip's Silly Slide
Year 1 of the Rainbow Era, Spring Late Afternoon
Chloe, Pip, and Blossom peeked at the sleepy bumblebee resting inside the bright yellow buttercup flower. They sat quietly on the damp moss together, waiting to see what would happen next.
The sun was warm in the meadow, but the ground was still wet. Chloe sat with her pink shoes tucked under her knees. Her long pink hair fell over her shoulders like soft ribbons. Her rainbow daisy crown had bright petals that caught the sunlight. Next to her, tiny Blossom fluttered her fairy wings. Blossom made a soft whirring sound in the quiet air. Pip stood nearby, holding his little brown stick in his hand. He wore his favorite green shirt, and his tiny fairy shoes made soft squishing sounds as he walked across the damp ground.
Pip stopped near a tall, bright yellow buttercup flower. The flower stood tall in the wet grass near the big shady plants. Pip leaned forward and looked closely at the yellow petals. He wanted to see if his favorite shiny treasure was hiding in the shadows. He knelt down on his knees. The damp soil felt squishy and cool under his fairy shoes. Pip reached out his small fingers. He gently lifted the heavy edge of a round yellow buttercup petal.
"Look here," Pip whispered softly. He peeked into the golden hollow beneath the petal. He looked all around the golden cup. But there was no blue treasure shining in the dark. Instead, something small and round was sitting right on the stem. It was a tiny brown snail with a smooth, wet shell. The snail was very quiet. It was taking a tiny rest under the petal.
Chloe leaned closer to see. Her freckled face was full of wonder. "Oh, what a little friend," she said happily. Pip kept his hand very still. The little brown snail slowly poked its head out from under its shell. It stretched its neck out into the fresh air. Two tiny soft horns wiggled on top of its head. One horn went up, and the other horn went down. The snail moved just a tiny bit across the wet plant stem. As it moved, it left behind a shiny silver line. The line sparkled like wet glass in the afternoon sunshine.
Pip bent down even lower. His nose almost touched the yellow petal. "Hello, little snail," Pip said. He looked behind the snail's shell. He looked under the bottom edge of the blossom. He really wanted to find his shiny pebble. But only the bright silver trail was there, shining wet and sticky against the yellow flower. Pip scratched his chin with his little brown stick. He wondered where his missing treasure could be.
The snail took another very slow step. It left another shiny smudge of silver on the smooth stalk. Pip wanted to look behind the flower stem. He thought the pebble might have rolled around to the other side. He put his small hand on the tall grass to steady himself. He lifted his foot to take one careful step forward.
"Be careful, Pip," Blossom said with a soft flutter of her wings. The ground was very slick. Pip took a step closer, but his small shoe touched the wet, slippery grass right beside the silver snail trail. His foot did not stop. His shoe slid forward across the wet ground like an acorn on ice. Pip's eyes went wide with surprise.
"Whoa!" Pip cried out. His little arms waved in the air. He dropped his brown stick into the wet grass. He tried to balance on his other foot, but it was too late. Whoosh! Pip tumbled sideways through the air. He rolled right over the damp soil and plopped straight into a thick bunch of soft round clover.
