Chapter 3
The Melody of the Singing Stream
Year 1 of the Rainbow Era, Spring Morning (Late morning)
After being crowned honorary Queen of the Meadow of Whispers with a sparkling daisy crown, Chloe and her fairy friends felt a mischievous gust of wind carry a shimmering feather down from the willow canopy, drawing them onward.
The morning sun climbed higher into the bright cerulean sky of the Rainbow Era, casting warm, golden rays across the dew-kissed meadows. With her long pink hair trailing behind her like a bright ribbon and her sparkling rainbow daisy crown sitting proudly upon her head, Chloe skipped lightly along a winding trail that led far beyond the familiar borders of the Meadow of Whispers. Beside her, fluttering in a dizzying ballet of iridescent light, flew her dearest companions, Pip and Blossom, their delicate wings humming a soft, continuous tune.
"Keep up, Butterfly!" Pip called out, doing a merry loop-de-loop around a tall stalk of clover before dropping down to hover just inches from Chloe's freckled nose. Blossom giggled softly, pointing ahead where the dense thicket of silver-leafed bushes finally gave way to an open, sun-drenched clearing. From that very clearing, a strange and wonderful sound drifted on the breeze—a gentle, crystalline chime that sounded remarkably like tiny glass bells ringing in perfect harmony.
Breaking through the final veil of fern fronds, Chloe gasped in sheer delight. Before them lay the Singing Stream, a breathtaking waterway whose crystal-clear current sparkled with every color of the spectrum. The water did not merely babble over its smooth river stones; it sang. Every time a stray flower petal, shaken loose from the blossoming cherry trees overhead, drifted down and kissed the surface of the ripples, the stream responded with a pure, resonant musical note. A cascade of pink petals struck a high, sweet trill, while a cluster of golden dandelion fluff evoked a warm, cello-like hum from the depths.
"Oh, listen!" Chloe whispered, dropping gracefully to her knees upon the soft mossy bank. Her favourite rainbow colours seemed to reflect off every inch of the flowing water, dancing in time with the hidden melody. Pip and Blossom immediately darted out over the water, carefully nudging a floating lotus petal toward a particularly deep eddy, coaxing out a sequence of notes that sounded like the beginning of a forgotten lullaby. As the music swelled around them, filling the spring morning with enchantment, Chloe reached out a fingertip to touch the nearest ripple, wondering what song the stream would sing just for her.
