Chapter 17
The Silt-Arch Collapse and the Unstamped Seal
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown

With Tax-Guard Captain Vane pinned to a masonry wall by magnetic surges, Captain Bramblefoot and his crew escaped into the dark depths of the ancient Guild root-cellar with the crystal root.
Mire and Stowaways
Struggling against the residual magnetic hum of the crystal root, Tax-Guard Captain Vane finally shattered the rusted rivets of his breastplate with a heavy iron pry-bar, tearing himself free from the masonry wall. Gasping for air, he turned to rally his squad, only to discover that Farmer Gilly's clever diversion of the marsh-side drainage channel had transformed the entire lower corridor into a chest-deep mire of thick, foul-smelling silt. His heavily armored reinforcements were utterly bogged down, cursing as their boots sank deeper into the muck. Realizing the outlaws were slipping further into the labyrinthine depths with the guild ledger and the crystal root, Vane shouted futilely across the waterlogged chasm, vowing that no amount of ancient parchment would save them from the gallows once he caught up.
Farther down in the security of the deep root-cellar, Captain Bramblefoot paused to catch his breath against a stack of rotting wooden crates. A suspicious rustling broke the silence of the cavern, followed immediately by the indignant squeak of stolen dried meat. Probing behind the crates with the tip of his cutlass, the captain unearthed an unexpected stowaway: a small, muddy marsh-goblin named Pox who had been quietly living off the crew's dwindling rations. Pox hissed and clutched a half-eaten beef strip, refusing point-blank to vacate his hiding spot or abandon the crew unless he was granted a legitimate share of the glowing root's magical warmth.
The Unsigned Decree and the Falling Ceiling
By the radiant, amber glow of the captured crystal root, Quartermaster Pip spread out the newly recovered ox-hide ledger across a flat stone slab. He squinted through the dim light, tracing the faded ink of the First Agricultural Guild, only to sink back with a groan. The magnificent tax exemptions protecting deep-stratum root harvests from municipal levies—their entire ticket out of Master Portly's financial clutches—required a royal signature that was conspicuously missing, leaving their prized get-out-of-tax-free card as a thoroughly useless, unsigned draft.
Before the crew could fully digest this bureaucratic disaster, the consequences of Farmer Gilly's muddy engineering caught up with them. Under the unrelenting weight of the diverted marsh waters, the stone crown of the silt-channel gave way behind the party with a deafening groan. A thunderous crack echoed through the root-cellar as an overhead archway sheared cleanly in half, dumping tons of damp soil and ancient bricks directly into the path behind Captain Bramblefoot, Quartermaster Pip, Barnaby, Farmer Gilly, and the stubborn goblin Pox. While the massive cave-in permanently trapped Tax-Guard Captain Vane's floundering squad on the far side and bought the outlaws a desperately needed breathing window, it also vibrated uncomfortably through the unstable bedrock beneath their boots. The dust hung thick in the stale air as fresh cracks spiderwebbed across the archaic agricultural archive overhead, whispering of even deeper tunnels yet to explore.
