Chapter 35
The Stained Hem and the Iron-Shod Heel
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown

Captain Bramblefoot and his cornered crew found themselves trapped inside the dockside tailor's shop as a spilled pot of royal purple ink ruined a bolt of grey wool and drew Tax-Guard Captain Vane's immediate attention.
With the ox-hide binding completely severed and aged parchment flakes drifting through the dim air of the tailor's shop, Jory pressed himself flat against the cutting table, frantically scooping up a handful of damp, unsigned tax exemptions. Across the room, Captain Bramblefoot remained awkwardly tangled in a hanging loop of the stained grey wool near the window, his weathered face wincing as heavy footsteps echoed against the floorboards.
Stepping past the swinging counter gate, Tax-Guard Captain Vane advanced with his hand resting heavily on the hilt of his shortsword. His heavy iron-shod heel ground directly over a spilled tin of brass coat buttons, sending them clattering across the polished pine floorboards in all directions and forcing the startled local tailor to drop his measuring tape in sheer, unadulterated panic. The shop interior grew tenser by the second, half-obscured by floating grey fibers and the acrid smell of spilled royal purple ink.
Huddled in the narrow gap between the cutting table and an upright cylinder of heavy sailcloth, Jory held his breath and desperately pressed the handful of damp tax signatures against his waistcoat. A dark pool of royal purple ink inched inexorably closer across the grain of the floorboards, threatening to swallow the only intact crown signatures he had managed to snatch away. With the escape routes thoroughly cut off and the heavy breathing of the tax-guards closing in from the main corridor, the crew faced their tightest corner yet—leaving the fate of the illicit ledger hanging by a single, frayed thread.
