Chapter 29
The Fennel-Scented Smoke and the Missing Pouch
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown

As smoke billowed from a smoldering straw bale near the Oakhaven Lower Drainage Pier, Captain Bramblefoot and Quartermaster Pip scrambled to salvage their waterlogged tax ledgers before passing wharf watchmen closed in.
Smoke on the Cobblestones
Near the damp stone arches of the Oakhaven Lower Drainage Pier, Captain Bramblefoot and Quartermaster Pip found themselves knee-deep in a desperate drying operation. The recovered ox-hide ledgers, speckled with river silt and fragrant fennel flakes purchased earlier that afternoon, were propped haphazardly against a split-log rack in a futile bid to beat the autumn chill. Unfortunately, a poorly smothered straw bale nearby chose that exact moment to begin billowing thick, gray smoke across the cobblestones, drawing the immediate, suspicious gaze of two municipal watchmen on patrol.
With the acrid smell of burning straw drawing the sharp eyes of the wardens closer, Captain Bramblefoot and Quartermaster Pip wasted no time packing their damp, half-dried documents. Clutching the heavy ox-hide ledger tightly to his chest, the captain led his quartermaster straight into the damp labyrinth of the lower fish market, leaving behind nothing but a smoldering pile of fennel-scented ash and a scattering of scorched kindling.
Shadows Under the Salt-House Eaves
Sheltered from the drizzling autumn mist beneath the heavy, overhanging slate roof of a curing shed deep within the Oakhaven Fish Market Alleys, Captain Bramblefoot and Pip finally caught their breath and met up with Barnaby and Pox. The small, muddy marsh-goblin was busy wringing moisture from his ragged tunic while Barnaby kept a watchful eye down the narrow brick corridor. It felt like they had slipped the net once more, trading the open exposure of the docks for the claustrophobic safety of the curing yards.
Yet the relief was short-lived. As Pip reached into his sodden waistcoat to tally their remaining spoils, his fingers brushed empty air rather than leather; a single stray pouch containing two heavy silver-alloy guild tokens had slipped free from his pocket during their headlong scramble through the fish market alleys, leaving them one miscalculation poorer in the heart of the watchmen's patrol zone.
