Chapter 20
The Lopsided Crown and the Creaking Grate
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown

Following the echoing clatter of a misplaced bronze stylus against an iron inkpot, Captain Bramblefoot's outlaws froze in the damp subterranean silence, listening anxiously for any sign of pursuing guards in the Oakhaven root-cellar.
Shadows in the Dust
With Captain Bramblefoot and the crew huddled closely in the damp root-cellar over the First Agricultural Guild's ox-hide ledger, tension runs razor-thin. A sudden clanking echo from the surface docks above causes everyone to freeze in absolute silence. Pox the marsh-goblin, clutching a half-eaten crust of cheese, freezes mid-chew as a stray sliver of light cuts down through a ventilation grate.
He violently misinterprets the dancing dust motes for the glowing residue of Tax-Guard Captain Vane's tracking dust, his wide amber eyes locking onto the empty air in quiet panic before Quartermaster Pip gently swats his ear down to keep him quiet.
Startled by Pox's frantic whispers about imaginary tax-guards, Barnaby scrambles up the damp stacked crates to fix the troublesome surface grate before Pox panics the entire group further. As he heaves a heavy wooden plank over the opening, his belt buckle snags on a forgotten length of rusted anchor chain, sending a sharp, echoing ring down through an adjoining ventilation shaft and dropping a cascade of metal links directly into a dry cistern below.
With nerves already frayed from hiding and trying to forge official documents under pressure, Quartermaster Pip sharply reprimands Barnaby for the sudden noise at the surface grate. In his irritation, his sleeve catches the rim of the heavy metal inkpot, sending it sliding dangerously toward the precipice of the stone table before catching it by a hair.
The Seal of Questionable Authority
In the damp gloom of the Oakhaven root-cellar, the crew crowds tightly around the ox-hide First Agricultural Guild ledger. Quartermaster Pip glares nervously at the sprawling ink blot resembling a horned toad, while Pox entertains Captain Bramblefoot with elaborate, animated gestures about subterranean marsh navigation to keep the captain's spirits high.
Seizing the moment of distraction, Barnaby takes an old, tarnished signet ring recovered from an abandoned pocket months ago, presses it firmly into the soft yellow wax spot on the margin, and leaves behind a lopsided impression that looks vaguely royal if squinted at in the dim candlelight.
Captain Bramblefoot squints down at the crudely sealed, forged tax exemption ledger, tracing the irregular wax edge with a thick thumb as the heavy amber hum of the crystal root vibrates faintly beneath the floorboards. Outside, the distant, muffled cadence of Master Portly's harbor patrols reminds them of the ticking clock on their debt, leaving the crew holding their collective breath over a piece of parchment that might either save them or hang them.
