Chapter 9
The Wedged Crustacean and the Steaming Chasm
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown

As Tax-Guard Captain Vane finally shattered the upper grating of the marsh-vault, Farmer Gilly shoved Captain Bramblefoot, Quartermaster Pip, the hermit Barnaby, and their trailing lobster trap headlong into the dark, unmapped fissure.
Echoes in the Limestone
The ancient stone door had barely groaned shut behind them before Captain Bramblefoot's bedraggled crew was forced to stumble blindly through the pitch-black subterranean arteries. The clumsy, oversized lobster trap—rescued from the harbor against all better judgment—bounced and clattered loudly against the uneven stone floor, a metallic percussion echoing wickedly off the damp limestone walls. Up ahead, cutting through the heavy, stagnant air, Tax-Guard Captain Vane's furious voice reverberated through the damp corridors. The tax-guards had clearly dropped into the vault with terrifying speed, and Vane's booming commands rang out, ordering his men to fan out and search every nook, cranny, and side-corridor.
Quartermaster Pip and Farmer Gilly hauled the persistent piece of marine hardware deeper into the fissure, sweating through their woolens as the tension mounted. Disaster struck when the heavy wire cage scraped harshly against a projecting stalagmite, sending a piercing screech through the cavern. The noise caused Tax-Guard Captain Vane to abruptly halt his methodical sweep, barking an immediate order for his patrol to converge directly upon the sound. The heavy, rhythmic thud of iron-shod boots began to draw dangerously near, closing the distance with every breathless second.
The Geothermal Drop
Sensing the rising panic among the cornered pirates, the eccentric cave-hermit Barnaby simply chuckled, muttering something incoherent about old smuggling runs executed long before Oakhaven was even paved over by the tax-collectors. He jabbed his gnarled wooden staff into a patch of slick moss, tripping a concealed, rusted counterweight hidden within the floor.
With a heavy, grinding groan, a section of the stone floor pivoted downward, plunging away into a mist-filled geothermal passage below. Thick clouds of white steam billowed upward from the hidden drop, carrying the mineral tang of subterranean hot springs and offering an immediate, if terrifying, barrier that the armor-clad tax-guards could not easily cross.
Yet even as the trapdoor opened to safety, the crew's escape hit an infuriating mechanical snag. The clumsy lobster trap caught itself dead between a pair of jagged stalagmites guarding the chasm's edge, wedging hard and acting as an uninvited iron anchor. With Tax-Guard Captain Vane's heavy boots now echoing loudly into the very tunnel entrance behind them, Captain Bramblefoot and Quartermaster Pip were thrown into a frantic, hushed tug-of-war. Gritting their teeth and risking discovery with every violent yank, the two men heaved against the wire mesh in the pitch black, desperate to dislodge Farmer Gilly's cursed gear before the first iron-helmed pursuer rounded the dark bend.
