Stoking the Hearth Before the Descent
Year 1 of the Gloom, Deep Night of the First Day
Thalia maintained her concentration as a glowing subterranean map projected from the awakened runic marker, revealing a hidden junction beneath Whispering Hollow. While Vane deciphered the blueprint's flickering amber corridors, the party realized the path below was shifting and waiting, setting the stage for a perilous descent into the dark.
The fire crackled low, casting long, frantic shadows against the moss-draped limestone walls of Whispering Hollow. Above them, the unnatural blanket of dark clouds held fast, a silent and suffocating ceiling that had robbed the world of its sun since the dawn of this grim era. Yet down here, sheltered within a shallow cleft of rock, the five companions gathered close to the dying embers, wrapped in the taut silence of those who know they are about to cross a threshold from which they might not return.
Kaelen methodically checked the links of his chainmail, his calloused fingers testing each ring with practiced care. Across the fire pit, Thalia sat cross-legged, eyes closed as she gently massaged her temples. The strain of locking her arcane energy into the runic marker still lingered in her veins, a faint, azure current pulsing beneath her skin. Beside her, Vane pored over the shimmering parchment copies he had hastily sketched from the subterranean projection, tracing the intricate, pre-gloom architecture that led down to the newly discovered junction. Every line he drew was a gamble, every calculated angle a prayer that the artificial grid humming in the sky above wouldn't notice their intrusion.
"The descent won't just be dark," Vane murmured, his voice barely rising above the crackle of the wood as he looked up at his companions. "The resonance we mapped... it's breathing. Whatever carved those lower tunnels centuries ago is reacting to our magic. When we cross that threshold, we are stepping right into its domain."
Lyra and Joric, keeping watch at the perimeter of the camp, exchanged a grim look. Joric tested the heft of his warhammer, the heavy iron head catching the firelight, while Lyra adjusted the tension on her bowstring. They had survived the sudden onset of the Gloom, endured the sky-grid's retaliatory pulse, and unearthered secrets long buried beneath the roots of the world. But as they pooled their remaining arcane charges, distributing precious vials of glowing moss and concentrated mana among themselves, the heavy weight of the unknown settled over the camp. With their gear secured, their minds steeled, and the hidden junction waiting just a few paces away in the gloom, the party stood ready to plunge into the subterranean abyss in search of the light they had lost.
