Into the Abyssal Roots
Year 1 of the Gloom, Dawn of the Second Day
As Lyra and Joric kept watch over the sheltered campsite, the party pooled their remaining arcane reserves and finalized their preparations, steeling themselves for the perilous journey ahead.
The air changed first, shifting from the damp, oppressive stillness of the surface woods to something ancient, metallic, and biting cold. Kaelen led the way past the humming stone runic marker, his boots finding purchase on the slick, sweat-polished stone of the newly revealed threshold. Behind him, Thalia kept one hand hovering near the pouch containing the projected subterranean blueprint, her fingers twitching with residual mana as she ensured the glowing cartography remained stable in her mind's eye.
Down they went, leaving the surface world entirely to the eternal night of the Gloom. The jagged stone walls closed in, swallowing the orange flicker of their remaining camp torches and replacing them with a pale, ethereal violet light bleeding from embedded mineral veins. Vane brought up the middle, muttering low incantations to test the acoustic properties of the shaft, mapping the strange, singing echoes that bounced off unseen chambers far below. Bringing up the rear were Lyra and Joric, their senses razor-sharp, listening for any sign that the subterranean silence might harbor teeth.
The descent was a slow, agonizing exercise in gravity and caution. Every ledge was tested, every shadow interrogated before a boot was planted. Yet, as the party slipped deeper into the subterranean junction beneath Whispering Hollow, a strange sense of momentum took hold. The artificial arcane grid humming high above in the suffocating cloud cover seemed to reach down here too, vibrating faintly through the bedrock in a steady, hypnotic pulse. They were moving closer to the heart of the mystery, descending into the dark to find the levers that might one day restore the sun—and as the stone stairs spiraled endlessly into the black, the true test of their fellowship began.
