The Blueprint of the Depths
Year 1 of the Gloom, Deep Night of the First Day
As Thalia sustained a glowing, projected map of the ancient tunnels beneath Whispering Hollow, Vane used the cartography to uncover a hidden subterranean junction. The party found their way forward, though the deepest corridors on the map flickered with a warning pulse.
The night air over Whispering Hollow hung heavy and cold, thick with the lingering charge of the sky-grid's earlier retaliation. Above them, the unnatural canopy of dark clouds choked out every star, leaving the party reliant entirely on the ethereal light radiating from the ground at their feet. Thalia knelt beside the exposed stone runic marker, her palms pressed flat against its moss-scarred surface. Her muscles were rigid, locked in a fierce, silent concentration as she channeled her own vital energy into the ancient glyphs. The stone responded with a low, vibrating hum, blooming upward into a three-dimensional projection of glowing blue light that mapped out the subterranean topography beneath the hollow.
Beside her, Vane crouched with his eyes narrowed, studying the intricate lattice of light. The glowing lines shifted and rearranged themselves under his focused gaze, tracing long-forgotten corridors, vaulted halls, and chasms untouched by sunlight for centuries. The artificial arcane grid humming miles above them in the perpetual gloom seemed to cast a dull, sympathetic pressure down through the bedrock, but Vane ignored it, his fingers tracing arcs in the air just above the projection. Every pulse of the grid above caused the map below to shiver slightly, creating a tense dialogue of magic between the trapped sky and the deep earth.
'Look here,' Vane said softly, his voice cutting through the quiet tension that held the rest of the party—Kaelen, Lyra, and the remaining companion—in a tight perimeter watch. He pointed to a dense cluster of intersecting ley-lines near the western edge of the projection. 'The standard paths lead to dead ends or collapsed bulkheads sealed during the cataclysm. But this corridor—it's independent. A hidden junction.'
Thalia’s breath hitched, her focus on the projection wavering for a fraction of a second before she locked her stance again. The mapped junction pulsed with a steady, amber luminescence, stark against the cool blue of the surrounding tunnels. It was an entrance, carved deep into the limestone and reinforced with pre-gloom architecture, offering a viable descent away from the watchful gaze of the artificial grid. Yet, as Vane stared deeper into the blueprints, the amber light within that specific junction flickered irregularly, dancing with a erratic rhythm that suggested the path was far from welcoming. Something down there was shifting, reacting to their presence or perhaps waking from a long, undisturbed slumber, leaving the party with the stark reality that their descent into the dark would demand every ounce of courage they possessed.
