The Secret Room Behind the Scrolls
Wednesday, September 25th, 42nd Year of the Canopy
Nutmeg the squirrel shared a wonderful secret with Pip the mouse and Bramble the hedgehog: she had found a hidden brass archway tucked away right behind the old story scrolls in the library trunk.
The afternoon sunlight streamed softly through the leafy windows of the treehouse village, turning the hollow library trunk into a cozy nook of dust motes and old paper. Pip, Bramble, and Nutmeg gathered together in the quiet corner behind the heavy storage trunk. Nutmeg carefully moved the dusty story scrolls aside, one by one, to reveal the tiny brass archway hidden in the dark wood of the wall.
Pip held the shiny brass key with the clover-shaped handle tightly in his small paws. His heart went thump, thump, thump with excitement. He stepped up to the little door and gently slid the key into the keyhole. It fit just right. With a soft, musical click, the lock turned easily. The little brass archway swung open just a crack, letting out a warm breeze that smelled sweet like clover and fresh mint.
With that soft click, Pip, Bramble, and Nutmeg pulled open the small door all the way. They peeked through the open archway and gasped. Inside was a cozy little room they had never seen before in all their days in the village. The walls were lined with tiny wooden shelves, and the space was filled with the soft, golden glow of hanging acorn-cap lamps. They smiled at each other, wondering what wonderful things might be waiting for them inside the secret room.
