The Door Behind the Books
Wednesday, September 25th, 42nd Year of the Canopy
Pip the mouse and Bramble the hedgehog stood side by side with the shiny brass key, wondering what door in their village it was meant to unlock.
The Cedar Cupboard
The morning sun was warm and golden as Pip the mouse and Bramble the hedgehog carried the shiny brass key together. They marched right up the wooden stairs of the village hall. The key had a pretty clover-shaped handle, and it felt very important in their paws. They walked straight to the old cedar storage cupboard where the villagers kept extra moss blankets and wooden acorn bowls.
Pip held the key steady while Bramble gently guided it into the keyhole. The metal fit halfway in, but when Bramble tried to twist it, the key got stuck and refused to turn. It was too small for the heavy cupboard lock. With a soft sigh, they pulled the key back out and looked at each other with sad little faces. Their first try had not worked at all.
Nutmeg's Secret
Just then, Nutmeg the squirrel bounded down from the upper branches with a little basket of fresh acorns. She saw the two friends standing by the cedar cupboard looking so gloomy, and she scampered over to see what was the matter.
Nutmeg peeked at the shiny brass key in Pip's paw. Her bright eyes widened, and she flicked her bushy tail. She told them not to be sad because she had a wonderful idea. Just yesterday, while putting away old story scrolls in the hollow library trunk, she had seen a peculiar tiny brass archway tucked away right behind the heavy books. It was small and hidden in the dark wood. Pip and Bramble gasped with excitement. Perhaps that was the true door for their special key.
