Sulfur and Seismic Echoes
Late Autumn of the 15th Year of the Obsidian Tide
As Clan Vane vanguard units clashed block-by-block with insurgents in Ironhollow, the eastern valleys descended into a grueling war of attrition while marine priests fortified their high mountain redoubt.
The Border of Whispers and the Southern Reach
Deep within the heavily timbered bastions of the Border of Whispers, the industrial desperation driving the Obsidian Pact reached a fever pitch. Desperate for metal to maintain momentum in the bitter urban combat at Ironhollow, Obsidian Pact artificers deliberately overrode the safety governors on their experimental mobile smelting furnace. Pushed far beyond safe design parameters to feed the ravenous frontline war machine, the colossal engine drew immense, roaring heat directly from the shifting tectonic plumes below. The intense thermal draw triggered localized minor seismic ruptures, venting boiling water and noxious sulfur vapors that poisoned the local air. A heavy, yellow-green fog choked the forest canopy, while the groaning earth threatened to awaken far more volatile subterranean entities slumbering deep beneath the bedrock.
Across the sea, the ecological collapse rippled outward into a desperate humanitarian crisis. Following the relentless disruption of agricultural trade by the maritime leviathan blockade, a severe food shortage gripped the coastal settlements of the southern islands. Toxic, sulfurous sea spray drifted inland, ruining soil vitality and killing local crops. Compounding the agrarian disaster, deep seismic tremors—echoing the massive awakening entity off the Atani Coast—caused several municipal and private storage cellars to cave in completely, crushing what little preserved grain remained and plunging the southern fishing and farming villages into acute famine.
Arrival in Oakhaven
As autumn deepened across the mist-shrouded western archipelago, a new figure stepped onto the salt-crusted docks of Oakhaven. Master Artificer Vaelen arrived directly from the turbulent northern highlands, seeking sanctuary from the collapsing frontier and hoping to find a testing ground for experimental acoustic deterrents. Bringing specialized knowledge of marine engineering and sound resonance, Vaelen presented himself at Captain Kaelen's autonomous command.
Unfurling weathered blueprints for advanced sonic-repulsion engines, Master Artificer Vaelen offered to retrofit the defense coalition's patrol skiffs with offensive sonic-pulse arrays. For Captain Kaelen, whose naval network remained hard-pressed by the silent, ominous presence of serpentine leviathans patrolling the shallows, the artificer's arrival offered a sudden and unexpected glimmer of technological hope. As technicians began hauling heavy copper cabling and vibration plates down to the harbor slips, the harbor braced itself for a new kind of warfare on the deep blue.
