Industrial Stagnation, Coastal Blockade, and Political Paralysis
Early Spring of the 15th Year of the Obsidian Tide
Clan Vane and the Tribe of the Red Ridge forged the Obsidian Pact, establishing fortified forward command posts near the contested border while ancient horrors stirred in the deep ocean trenches.
The Eastern Valleys and Atani Coast
Across the eastern valley federation, the true price of continental ambition fell heavily upon the common folk as the late winter gave way to the early spring of the fifteenth year of the Obsidian Tide. With every available ounce of iron completely diverted to manufacture weapons for the joint vanguard of Clan Vane and the Tribe of the Red Ridge, local smithies remained shuttered and cold. Agricultural tool production ground to a grinding standstill. Village elders watched helplessly across the federation as broken plows went unrepaired and unharvested crops rotted away in the freezing mud, while quiet grumblings of dissent spread among a populace forced to sacrifice their livelihoods for a distant war.
Further toward the foaming shores, the maritime crisis along the Atani Coast escalated from a series of terrifying omens into a total blockade. Mariners completely abandoned all deep-water routes as blind, serpentine leviathans established permanent, menacing patrols throughout the shallow straits. Coastal villages found themselves entirely cut off from neighboring islands and inland trade as terrified sailors refused to push their vessels off from the shore. Amidst the mounting isolation, marine priests frantically performed ancient appeasement rituals beneath flickering green torchlight, watching helplessly as sickly green bioluminescent pulses churned the dark waters just beyond the breakers.
The Schism of Oakhaven
A short distance away across the fractured islands, the political climate proved just as deadlocked and volatile as the frozen fields and blocked waters. Inside the drafty basalt council halls of Oakhaven, months of bitter infighting between the island factions calcified completely. Efforts to broker any form of compromise between the cautious traditionalist elders and the aggressive younger war chiefs collapsed entirely.
Traditionalist leaders flatly refused to provision or dispatch any auxiliary forces to the mainland, arguing that the rising tide of deep-sea horrors made defending their own shores the only rational priority. In response, the younger war chiefs denounced the elders as blind cowards doomed to perish in ignorance. This permanent political deadlock shattered the western clans' ability to act as a cohesive military power, leaving the region utterly incapable of fielding a unified defense just as the war drums beat louder across the continent.
