Tides of Revolt and Abyssal Awakening
Late Spring of the 15th Year of the Obsidian Tide
As bloody skirmishes tore through the fog-choked forests of the Border of Whispers, mounting tremors from the ocean trenches and quiet revolts across the eastern valleys hinted at a looming continental reckoning.
The Atani Coast and the Ironhollow Smitheries
Along the desolate, wave-lashed cliffs of the Atani Coast, the marine priests gathered in a state of growing terror as mid-spring gave way to the later weeks of the season. Gathered at the rocky outcrops, the surviving priests offered frantic prayers and ritual sacrifices into the churning, heat-laden surf. Below the surface, the rhythmic, sickly green bioluminescence from the abyssal trenches grew increasingly intense, casting an unearthly glow across the water and driving the blind serpentine leviathans into a frenzied, churning agitation that shook the very coastline. Subterranean heat plumes continued to vent directly into the shallows, turning the water tepid and foul while the slumbering entities of the deep stirred with an ancient, hungry malice.
Far inland, away from the roaring surf but consumed by an equally volatile fury, tensions in the eastern valley town of Ironhollow boiled past the point of no return. Following the earlier work stoppages and confrontations with Pact quartermasters, underground networks of local blacksmiths and laborers took direct action against the militarization of their craft. Working under the cover of night, insurgents slipped past guards to crack open the primary smelting crucibles, deliberately pouring cold water onto white-hot iron plates. The resulting violent hissing of steam and warped metal ruined massive batches of weaponry, crippling the ordnance output destined to feed the Obsidian Pact vanguard on the front lines and plunging the valley federation into an open, undeclared war of subversion.
The Border of Whispers
A short time later, along the contested perimeter of the fog-choked Border of Whispers, the military architects of the Obsidian Pact moved to seal their gains against relentless irregular resistance. Faced with persistent guerrilla ambushes that had bloodied their scouting columns in the mist, the leadership of Clan Vane and the Tribe of the Red Ridge ordered the immediate construction of fortified observation posts. Heavy timber and quarried stone were hauled into the dripping, mist-shrouded forests, where military engineers rapidly erected heavy watchtowers overlooking the ravines and trails.
Armed patrols soon manned these looming wooden bastions, establishing interlocking fields of fire designed to deny the local guerrilla fighters the shadows and trails they had used to such devastating effect. Yet even as the watchtowers cast long, intimidating silhouettes through the fog, anchoring the Pact's grip on the disputed supply lines, the distant tremor of the Atani Coast and the silent, cooling forges of Ironhollow served as grim reminders that the alliance was fracturing from within and without. The war for the ancient power ground onward, leaving every faction to wonder whether their fortified walls would hold against the dual threats of human defiance and the awakening deep.
