Depths, Dust, and the Iron Sinks
October 18, 2142
Following intense emergency fuel rationing, a massive and coordinated assault by wasteland factions shattered the Ashlands Guild's primary surface-level fuel silos, leaving the western approaches burning and energy reserves critically compromised.
Descent into the Drowned Downtown
Beneath the skeletal towers of the ruined metropolis, the High-Tier Technocrat recovery teams made their move. Armed with sealed environmental suits and heavy magnetic winch rigs, the vanguard breached the groaning, rusted blast doors of the pre-collapse underground transit depot. The air inside tasted of stagnant damp and ancient concrete, thick with the silence of decades past. The promise of intact pre-collapse power cells and medical caches drew the operation deeper into the subterranean maze, even as rising, brackish water levels lapped at their boots and overhead structural supports groaned under the weight of the city above. Yet they were not alone in the dark. Faint metallic echoes and the swinging beams of rival scavenging crews cut through the gloom ahead, turning the expedition into a tense, silent race against time through the flooded tunnels.
Out on the blistering perimeter above, that same tension erupted into open warfare. Heavy gunfire rattled across the charred wasteland as Ashlands Guild enforcement squads deployed armored patrol buggies to retake the storage yards following the recent perimeter breach. Nomadic groups, desperate to secure fuel for long-range transport before winter set in, dug in hard behind shattered concrete barricades and welded scrap shields. They traded sustained rifle fire with the Guild's enforcers, turning the industrial yard into a fierce, localized battlefield where every gallon of spilled petroleum soaked deeper into the ash.
Crackdown in the Iron Sinks
Far to the south, where the city's lifeblood flowed through massive concrete channels, the Rust Syndicate moved to crush a different kind of rebellion. Syndicate enforcers, clad in heavy leather and stamped iron armor, flooded the damp, echoing maintenance pipes of the Iron Sinks aqueduct junctions. Their mission was absolute: root out and destroy the rogue scavenger smuggling rings that had dared to set up independent black-market water filtration hubs. Improvised filtration rigs and recycled chemical scrubbers were systematically smashed against the flagstones, their contents flushing away into the dark runoff channels. The Syndicate meant to reassert total monopoly over clean water distribution, but independent scavengers fought back with vicious familiarity, sabotaging main valve controls to plunge whole sections into darkness and melting away into the sprawling, resentful slum population before the enforcers could secure their lines. As the valves hissed and the water pressure fluctuated wildly across the junctions, the fragility of the city's factions hung by a thinning thread.
