The Awakening Tides and the Obsidian Pact
Autumn of the 14th Year of the Obsidian Tide
Deep beneath the restless waters surrounding the sacred archipelago, an unnatural warmth began to seep through the dark water columns of the deep trenches. Marine priests of the coastal Atani tribe watched in mounting dread as strange seismic tremors shook the ocean floor, accompanied by eerie, rhythmic bioluminescent pulses that cast a sickly green glow over the abyssal plains. This subterranean agitation heralded something far worse than mere earth-shaking: mass migrations of blind, predatory leviathans began surging upward from the dark trenches toward the shallow straits. Driven by a primeval terror or perhaps drawn by the scent of the ongoing continental bloodshed, these ancient sea horrors signaled to the coastal watchers that the three-year war raging across the lands was disturbing forces far older, hungrier, and more terrible than any of the five tribes could possibly comprehend.
While the sea grew restless below, the geopolitical landscape above fractured and reformed under the shadow of the mainland's rumored power. High in a desolate mountain pass swept by cold autumn winds, delegates from the northern mountain clans known as Clan Vane and the eastern valley federation known as the Tribe of the Red Ridge met in absolute secrecy to forge the Obsidian Pact. Recognizing that individual tribal forces could no longer withstand both the crushing might of rival armies and the lethal hazards of the central mainland, the two smaller island factions formalized a fragile military alliance. They pooled their remaining iron reserves and agreed to share vital intelligence regarding troop movements toward the rumored seat of power, desperately hoping that unity might keep them from being crushed between larger belligerents.
Yet, even as these pacts were inked in cold ink and candlelight, blood was already soaking the contested earth of the mainland. An exploratory vanguard from the dominant southern tribe stumbled directly into a deadly trap within the mist-shrouded borderlands known as the Border of Whispers. As the southern expeditionary force attempted to secure a vital freshwater spring at the edge of the contested territory, poisoned darts rained down without warning from the thick, fog-laden canopy above. What followed was a fierce, chaotic night battle where the darkness echoed with the clashing of steel and the desperate cries of the ambushed soldiers. The guerrilla scouts who laid the trap melted back into the fog, leaving the southern vanguard reeling and cementing the brutal reality that no corner of the land remained untouched by the spreading war, even as the ancient deep began to wake.
