The Turnip Broker of Lobster Cove
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown
After narrowly slipping out of Oakhaven without paying their back-dockage fees, Captain Bramblefoot and his crew mistakenly dropped anchor in a dense coastal fog—only to find themselves fast to Farmer Gilly's floating lobster trap.
A Skiff in the Fog
Stuck fast to Farmer Gilly's floating marker in the middle of the dense coastal fog, Captain Bramblefoot and his perpetually bewildered crew bicker in low, panicked whispers over exactly who was entrusted with the anchor drop. Before the heavy iron can be hauled back up from the murky depths, the rhythmic, irritated splash of wooden oars cuts through the gray shroud.
Farmer Gilly, furious and wielding a rusted eel-spear, pulls his leaky flat-bottomed skiff alongside The Drunken Pelican with a face as red as a boiled crab. He brands the shattered remains of his prized floating lobster trap like a weapon, screaming about crushed crustacean cages and a ruined autumn harvest. Gilly insists that Captain Bramblefoot pay for both the physical damage and the lost catch of the morning tide, waving the broken wooden slats in the captain's face and threatening to march straight back to Oakhaven to report the pirates to Master Portly if they refuse.
First Mate Barnaby attempts to defuse the escalating confrontation by stepping forward with absolute, unearned confidence and offering the enraged farmer a generous share of the crew's nonexistent vault treasure. This gesture only serves to push Gilly further into a blind rage, causing him to jab his rusty eel-spear toward the sloop's salt-stained hull while demanding five silver pieces or a crate of contraband rum as immediate compensation.
The Crusty Alliance
Realizing the crew’s coin purses are entirely empty save for a few lint-covered buttons and a stale biscuit, Quartermaster Pip steps smoothly between the captain and the waving eel-spear. Launching into a masterclass of desperate, silver-tongued negotiation, Pip taps the waterlogged, charcoal-smudged parchment resting on the capstan.
Pip convinces the shellfish farmer that the ominous black blob on their ruined map—the one everyone else insists looks suspiciously like a weeping turnip—actually points to an ancient, forgotten underground storehouse filled with legendary golden parsnips and subterranean root vegetables. Gilly narrows his eyes, squinting skeptically at the incomprehensible smear of ink and soot, but the promise of rare agricultural riches slowly tempers his fury.
By degrees, the angry confrontation thaws into a begrudging partnership. Farmer Gilly lowers his eel-spear, agreeing to trade his immediate silence and his intimate local knowledge of the coastal shallows in exchange for a guaranteed cut of the vegetable bounty. Aboard the gently rocking sloop, the crew trades nervous, hopeful glances as their newest and most unexpected recruit climbs aboard, eyeing the fog-shrouded horizon for a path to a treasure that may or may not exist.
