The First Dawn That Never Came
Year 1 of the Gloom, Morning of the First Day
The damp, mossy earth of Whispering Hollow offered no warmth to greet the dawn, for the simple reason that no dawn had arrived. Five souls blinked against the oppressive, velvety blackness that clung to the trees, the ground, and their own shivering skin. Around the campsite, the embers of the previous night's fire glowed like dying embers in a dead hearth, casting weak, amber flickers that died mere inches from the logs. There were no birds singing, no rustle of morning wind through the high canopy—only a heavy, suffocating silence that pressed down from above.
Kaelen, a ranger whose eyes were usually sharpest at first light, cursed softly as his hand brushed against the cold bark of a weeping willow. Beside him, Lyra fumbled with a flint and steel, the metallic sparks offering a momentary, jagged ghost-illumination of the others. There was Vance, the heavy-set fighter whose fingers checked instinctively for the crossguard of his greatsword; Ignis, whose fingertips danced with a nervous, self-taught spark of raw aether; and Selene, the quiet scholar whose eyes were already straining upward toward a sky she knew could no longer be seen.
"The stars are gone. The sun should be halfway up the ridge by now," Kaelen muttered, his voice sounding hollow in the dense air.
They had gone to sleep beneath a clear, late-summer sky, brimming with the usual camaraderie and exhaustion of a long adventuring trek. Now, a ceiling of pitch-black, unnatural clouds choked out every vestige of the heavens, sealing them inside a world turned upside down. It was not merely night; it was an absolute absence of light, thick enough to touch. As Ignis finally coaxed a sustained magical flame into existence upon her palm, the sickly blue-white illumination revealed the look of grim realization shared among them: whatever had stolen the sky had done so completely, and they were standing at the very epicenter of a continent draped in eternal gloom.
