Currents in the Dark
Year 1 of the Gloom, Afternoon of the First Day
Garrett steeled himself against the impenetrable dark of the new day, knowing that an unseen architect had stolen the sun, leaving the party to face a sprawling and unknown mystery.
The afternoon air in Whispering Hollow felt heavy, tasting of ozone and wet ash. There was no sun to mark the passing of the hours, only a dull, bruised twilight that clung to the damp earth like a shroud. Around the low embers of their morning fire, the five companions gathered in tense silence. They were cut off from the world they knew, marooned beneath a canopy of pitch-black clouds that defied every law of nature and astronomy.
Lyra stepped forward, her boots crunching softly on the frost-tipped moss. Her fingers, stained with ink and soot, traced intricate geometric patterns in the air. As she began to chant under her breath, a pale, luminescent blue light bloomed from her palms, casting long, dancing shadows across the faces of her comrades—Garrett, whose hand never strayed far from his bowstring; Vane, the towering warrior who watched the perimeter with wary eyes; Kaelen, shifting restlessly as he monitored their provisions; and Thalia, who knelt silently nearby, ready to mend whatever wounds the shadows might conceal.
The divination spell took hold with a low, vibrating hum that set their teeth on edge. Lyra’s eyes rolled back slightly, glowing with the same eerie azure hue as her hands, as she reached upward with her mind. The dark clouds above were not a passive storm; they were woven. As her spell traced the faint, hidden currents of resonance pulsing through the gloom, a complex grid of geometric light revealed itself for a fraction of a second, spider-webbing across the artificial sky.
"It's an engine," Lyra whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she dropped her hands and let the spell fade, plunging them back into the oppressive gloom. "Not a weather front. A construct. Something up there is pumping this darkness into the world, and it's reacting to my magic."
Garrett looked up, his jaw set hard as the invisible threads above seemed to shift in response to the probe, as if a sleeping beast had just felt a gnat crawl across its hide. The mystery of the eternal night had just deepened, but worse still, they now knew the darkness was watching back.
