A Slice of Grim Levity
Year 1 of the Gloom, Morning of the Third Day
Lyra traded her newly discovered maintenance bypass route with Bram the scavenger in exchange for vital cartographic details regarding the shifting hazards below, leaving the companions to weigh the heavy toll of their descent into the gloom.
With the trade finalized and the route adjustments laid out across the damp stone floor of the abandoned storage alcove, a brief moment of levity broke the heavy tension that had gripped the company since their arrival. Bram, thoroughly unbothered by the looming dark clouds choking the surface or the bitter, unresolved feud simmering between Vane and Kaelen over the dark glass conduit, cheerfully produced a dented tin from his pack and compared it with one of the party's standard-issue dried rations. He loudly critiqued the stiff, gray texture of the preserved cheese block before carving off a greasy wedge and offering it directly to an utterly appalled Kaelen. For a single fleeting second, the grim, suffocating atmosphere of the deep tunnels lifted as even Vane suppressed a reluctant smirk at the scavenger's brazen audacity.
That fragile amusement, however, was as brief as it was sudden. Barely moments after swallowing the suspiciously aged cheese, Bram's cheerful demeanor evaporated into a violently green pallor. His eyes bulged, and he dropped his maps, clutching his stomach with a hollow groan as the ancient dairy fought a brutal, losing war within his constitution. His dramatic, contorting grimaces and frantic, stumbling search for a waterskin cut through the quiet damp of the alcove, finally drawing a full, genuine chuckle from Kaelen. The absurd spectacle temporarily defused the icy friction that had kept the companions at odds, reminding them all that even beneath a sky of unnatural darkness and amidst the threat of collapsing bedrock, human folly remained stubbornly alive. Yet, as Bram wheezed into his knees and the echoes of their laughter faded back into the dripping silence of the stone, the heavy reality of their next step settled back over the room—the bypass route was marked, but the crawl into the fractured depths still awaited them.
