Shadows Upon the Subura Wall
November 5, 45 BC
While Gaius sat isolated in his office watching his financial ledgers bleed coin from severed grain contracts, Marcus plotted a desperate night-time infiltration to bypass the daily doorstep stalemates.
The night air over the Subura was thick with the scent of damp earth and distant hearth smoke as Marcus moved through the winding, shadowed alleyways. Carried by the grim momentum of his pact with Lucius and a relentless longing that defied reason, he reached the crumbling stone perimeter of Livia's rear courtyard. Finding a vulnerable section where the ancient mortar had eroded away, he planted his boots against the masonry. Pulling himself upward with scarred, weathered hands, he slipped quietly over the top of the wall and dropped soundlessly onto the flagstones of the private garden, standing just feet from her private quarters.
Moving with the silent discipline learned from years in the foreign legions, Marcus navigated the dark shadows, determined to force a direct confrontation before dawn could break and Gaius resumed his frantic morning vigil. Slipping from the courtyard shadows toward the main living quarters, he tested a heavy wooden shutter and forced entry into the interior. The sudden, uninvited scrape of wood and movement cut short the quiet sanctuary Livia and Valeria had found together inside. Startled awake by the intrusion, Livia and Valeria sat up as the dim candlelight caught the silhouette of the veteran standing before them, his chest heaving with exhaustion and an unyielding desperation to plead his case face-to-face.
