The Ghost of the Forum Boarium
October 31, 45 BC
While running errands near the Forum Boarium, Gaius crossed paths with a battle-weary veteran of the tenth legion who bore an uncanny resemblance to Livia's long-lost Marcus.
The Weight of a Secret
The shadows lengthen across the flagstones of the courtyard as evening cools the brickwork of the Subura. Gaius steps through the low wooden gate, his mind still tethered to the Forum Boarium and the haunted eyes of the tenth legion veteran. He finds Livia by the oil lamps, tending the evening hearth. When she looks up and notices the distant, troubled set of his brow, she crosses the small room to him, her hands coming up to rest flat against his chest, feeling the heavy, uneven beat of his heart beneath his tunic. She murmurs softly, pressing her cheek against his wool-clad shoulder, asking what weighs on him.
Seeking to protect the fragile peace they have built, Gaius swallows the name on the tip of his tongue, burying the phantom of Marcus beneath a reassuring smile. He cups her chin in his rough palm, tilting her face upward before pressing his lips firmly to hers. The kiss deepens, turning fierce and hungry as the unspoken anxieties melt into the heat of their embrace. Livia gasps softly against his mouth, her fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of his neck as he pulls her flush against his frame. With urgent, trembling hands, Gaius unlaces the heavy wool of her stola, his fingers tracing the smooth, warm expanse of her collarbone and shoulders as he lifts her effortlessly toward the low pallet bed in the corner, losing themselves entirely in each other's touch as the lamplight flickers against the stone walls.
Late into the following night, however, the heavy cloak of guilt settles over Gaius. The oil lamp sputters low against the rough stucco wall of the bedchamber where Livia lies with her head pillowed on his chest, listening to the steady, heavy thud of his heart. She can feel the restless tension in his muscles, the way his fingers trace absent circles against her bare shoulder instead of resting still. When she asks him again what weighs on his mind, Gaius hesitates, the silence stretching between them until he finally speaks of the ragged soldier with the tenth legion insignia outside the wine shop. The words hang heavy in the air, shattering the fragile peace of their home and freezing Livia's breath in her throat as the ghost she thought buried suddenly reaches out from the shadows.
Footsteps in the Subura Shadows
The final day of October brings a damp, chilly mist rolling off the Tiber, wrapping the narrow tenements of the Subura in a grey shroud. The evening air is thick with woodsmoke and the sharp scent of garum from overflowing drains.
Marcus pulls his rough woolen cloak tighter around his scarred shoulders, his boots crunching softly over the cobblestones. Every corner and crumbling wall stirs a flood of memories from a life before the legions swallowed him whole, before the long years of mud, blood, and forced marches across foreign provinces. Driven by a relentless, burning need to see if the girl he left behind still remembers him, he slips through the familiar labyrinth of alleys until he finds himself standing just outside the low stone wall of Livia's family courtyard.
He halts in the deep shadows of an overhanging portico, his heart hammering against his ribs in the dark. A single warm light glows from within the small home, casting long silhouettes against the window frame, and Marcus raises a trembling, calloused hand toward the gate, unaware of the confession just spoken within.
